The Six Cs of Healthy, Happy People
The Six Cs of Healthy, Happy People combines the work of Erkens, Schimmer, and Vagle along with the effect size research of John Hattie to provide a comprehensive elementary school counseling program. Our goal at Old Mill is to have our students ready for middle school and beyond. To be ready, we focus on students' academic Essential Skills and also their Essential Behaviors.

Old Mill Elementary is known for their work with the RTI process. The RTI process is the process that allows teachers to establish essential standards and skill for their students. In our counseling program, the Six Cs are our standards. Click on any of the Six Cs to learn more about what we will be learning this year.

The Work of John Hattie
The research of John Hattie looks at the statistical measure of 'effect size' and the impact of a variety of influences on students’ achievement such as class size, holidays, feedback, and learning strategies.

Hattie’s study was designed as a meta-meta-study (two meta's) that collects, compares, and analyzes the findings of nearly 50,000 previous studies in education and brings the data together in a way that is seemingly comprehensible.

According to Hattie, different activities and behaviors will have a positive or negative effect on a student's growth. However, some behaviors have a greater positive/negative effect than other. Our goal as educators is to keep our practices in the .40 or above range.
We provides skills that have an effect range of .40 - .86. These skills and their effect size provides students with the tools to be successful wherever their lives take them after elementary school.
